First-Generation Website
Cal Poly Resource Page
Creating a first-generation college student page for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was a year long project thought of by Miaya May and myself and hosted by the College of Liberal Arts Diversity Committee. The focus was to provide resources and connections for first-gen students. This project would not have been possible without the labor of first-gen faculty and students whose vision of collective care serves to benefit students for years to come.
During the summer of 2020 I created the logo, website and gathered the resources for this student website page.
Logo Creation – Process
Using Cal Poly branding guidelines, I came up with a symbol to represent students who were the first in their family to attend college. There is a lot of pressure for first-gen students to follow one path of success but I wanted to illustrate the different possibilities that come with receiving higher education.
Final
The lines in the “1” symbol represent opportunities and paths that are available to first-gen students and the main green arrow represents the guidance and direction that this resource page hopes to offer.
Website Creation – Icons
Each resource category received their own icon to accompany it in the website. I worked with Cal Poly website designers to present these resources in a way that was informative and helpful.
First-Gen Faculty
In creating this website we also wanted students to create connections with others that had gone through similar experiences. For this reason, we created a first-gen faculty resource section that presented students with faculty in each department that understood their unique situations. We were amazed at the enthusiasm from the Cal Poly faculty about this page and appreciate their commitment.
